Theodore John Leonsis (born January 8, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York) is an Internet pioneer, sports team owner, venture capital investor, filmmaker, author and philanthropist. His early new media company, Redgate Communications was acquired by America Online in 1994, and Leonsis became a senior AOL executive for the next 13 years. He is the majority owner of the NHL's Washington Capitals, the NBA's Washington Wizards, the WNBA's Washington Mystics and the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Leonsis a founding member and investor in the Revolution Growth Fund, leading investments in FedBid, Resonate Networks, and Echo360. He serves as Founder and Chairman of SnagFilms, vice chairman of Groupon and on the board of American Express and other companies.
